Genbudo is a scenic spot designated as a National Natural Monument, located in Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture. Its most striking feature is the beautiful hexagonal columnar joints formed during the cooling process of lava. This geometric beauty, sculpted by nature, leaves visitors in awe. The area is well-equipped with Genbudo Park and the Genbudo Museum, allowing visitors to connect with the history of the ancient Earth through both natural geological formations and scientific exhibits.
This area is renowned for its prominent 'columnar joints'—regular, polygonal pillars created as volcanic lava cooled. This unique topography serves as evidence of the Earth's dynamic geological activity and holds significant academic value, which is why it has been designated as a National Natural Monument. This landscape has long been cherished as a natural wonder and serves as a symbol of the local region.
In Genbudo Park, you can observe several different types of 'caves' or hollows shaped by the terrain. In particular, the large formations known as Genbudo and Seiryo-do are famous for their exceptional geometric beauty. Additionally, the adjacent Genbudo Museum showcases traces of ancient life, such as amber and trilobite fossils. Seeing insects preserved within amber or detailed fossil specimens feels like opening a time capsule to a prehistoric era.
While the geological formations of Genbudo can be enjoyed year-round, the scenery changes with the seasons. Since the park is an open outdoor environment, visiting during the daytime on a clear day is highly recommended to see the textures and shadows of the stones more vividly. However, please note that during winter, some cave viewing areas may be restricted due to snow or rockfall risks, so checking the status in advance is advised.
You can combine nature observation with learning and relaxation. At the Genbudo Museum, you can learn about Earth's history through exhibits of Colombian amber and Paleozoic trilobites. Furthermore, the museum's attached restaurant and cafe offer terrace seating, allowing you to spend a relaxing time surrounded by the peaceful natural environment.
The area around Genbudo is dotted with representative sightseeing spots of Toyooka City, such as Kinosaki Onsen and the Kounotori Village (Oriental Stork Park). Since Kinosaki Onsen is easily accessible by car or bus, you can easily create a travel plan that combines a relaxing hot spring stay with a visit to these natural wonders.
