Genbikyo Gorge is a stunning valley located in the middle reaches of the Ichinoseki River in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. The erosion caused by the river flowing from Mount Kurikoma has created a spectacular landscape of jagged rocks, deep ravines, and waterfalls stretching over 2 km. As a renowned scenic spot, visitors can enjoy walking along the riverside paths, observing the dynamic movement of the water between massive rock formations and steep cliffs.
Genbikyo was designated as a National Scenic Spot and Natural Monument on September 5, 1927. It has long been cherished as a place of great natural beauty. A notable historical feature is the 'Chojataki Bridge.' When it was constructed in 1939, it was recorded as a 'take-suji bridge' (bamboo-framed bridge) using bamboo for its structure, and it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 1999.
The greatest attraction is the dramatic topography created by nature. In particular, the 'potholes'—circular depressions in the bedrock carved out by pebbles swirling in the water currents—are considered precious geological specimens. The area is well-equipped with walking paths and rest areas, allowing visitors to experience the different moods of the gorge, from the calm downstream areas to the more rugged upstream sections.
Genbikyo offers a different face in every season. In spring, the fresh greenery of the surrounding trees adds vibrant color to the riverside scenery. For your visit, you can choose between a gentle 30-minute stroll around the downstream area or a more adventurous 70-minute hike toward the upstream area to feel the raw power of nature. We recommend visiting during daylight hours, as the changing angle of the sun beautifully illuminates the textures of the rock faces and the colors of the river.
The highlight of any visit to Genbikyo is the famous 'Koku-ko Dango' (Flying Dumplings). This unique experience involves placing money in a small wooden hut and striking a wooden mallet to make a sound. In response, a basket suspended by a cable is sent from the shop on the opposite side of the river to deliver your treats. Watching the basket carry the delicious dumplings and tea across the river is a highly photogenic and delightful experience that many tourists love.
There are several other interesting spots around Genbikyo in Ichinoseki City. For instance, Geibikei Gorge, also located in Ichinoseki, is another famous scenic valley that many travelers visit in a single trip. Additionally, there are roadside stations (Michi-no-Eki) nearby, making it easy to stop for local specialties and refreshments during your travels.
