Fushimi Momoyama Castle (Fushimi Castle) is a historic castle site located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City. It carries the profound history of a famous castle once built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later reconstructed by Tokugawa Ieyasu. The current landscape is centered around a grand reconstructed castle tower located on the site of the former 'Fushimi Momoyama Castle Castle Land' amusement park, which opened in 1964. While it is a reconstructed tower made of reinforced concrete rather than an original ancient structure, it stands as a magnificent symbol and a beloved landmark for the local community.
The history of Fushimi Castle is divided into two major stages: the Toyotomi era and the Tokugawa era. The original Fushimi Castle, built on Mt. Shigetsu in 1592 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, was characterized by its luxurious and ornate style. Following the Battle of Sekigahara, the castle was lost and its buildings were destroyed, leading to its reconstruction by Tokugawa Ieyasu. The area became known as 'Momoyama' due to the peach trees planted around the castle during the Genroku era, which is the origin of the current place name, 'Fushimi Momoyama.' Additionally, parts of the castle ruins are managed by the Imperial Household Agency as the Fushimi Momoyama Imperial Mausolea, adding a layer of high historical and cultural significance to the area.
The biggest attraction is the reconstructed castle tower within the park. Standing as a grand structure with five stories and six levels, it retains the imposing presence of the former amusement park era. Although the interior of the tower is currently closed to the public due to seismic safety regulations, its exterior provides a striking sense of the scale and grandeur of the original castle. Furthermore, because the site is adjacent to the Fushimi Momoyama Imperial Mausolea, the area offers a unique coexistence of castle history and imperial cultural heritage.
The scenery around Fushimi Momoyama Castle changes beautifully with the seasons. Spring (March to April) is an especially wonderful time to visit to enjoy the surrounding landscape. Autumn (October to November) is also a great season to experience the changing colors of nature. Since the site is a well-maintained park, strolling around during the bright daylight hours allows for a clear and impressive view of the castle tower.
As the site is developed as the 'Fushimi Momoyama Castle Sports Park,' the primary activity is walking and exploring while admiring the castle structure. After the former amusement park closed, the area became a peaceful space for locals and visitors to relax. While you cannot enter the inside of the tower, you can enjoy the view of the exterior and use your imagination to visualize the original castle layout while walking through the terrain.
The area surrounding Fushimi Momoyama Castle is rich in historical context. Nearby, you will find the Fushimi Momoyama Imperial Mausolea, an area subject to historical research and preservation. Additionally, the Fushimi area is famous for its sake brewing industry, making this a perfect stop as part of a larger cultural route exploring traditional streetscapes and local heritage.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the park. While the paths are well-maintained, please be mindful of your footing when walking near the historical ruins or uneven areas. Regarding payments, cash may be required if you use local parking facilities. Please note that the interior of the castle tower is not accessible, so viewing is limited to the exterior. As the area includes the Fushimi Momoyama Imperial Mausolea, visitors are asked to maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor to preserve the solemn atmosphere of the surroundings.
