Echizen Daibutsu (Seidaiji Temple) is a temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect, located in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture. It was founded in 1987 by the industrialist Kiyoshi Tada. The most striking feature is the colossal Vairocana Buddha, standing at a height of 17 meters. This massive statue is modeled after the seated figure at the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, China, and its overwhelming scale leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. The vast temple grounds feature a well-ordered layout of buildings and a beautiful stroll garden adorned with stones and lanterns collected from all over Japan, creating a space of profound serenity.
The temple began its journey as a tourist facility with its eye-opening ceremony on May 28, 1987. In 2002, it was officially recognized as a religious corporation and currently belongs to the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen. The creation of this magnificent Buddha was driven by the vision of local businessman Kiyoshi Tada. While the management and land ownership have seen various transitions over the years, the temple continues to fulfill its religious role while carving out a new chapter in history through increased international recognition and growing visitor numbers.
The grounds are dotted with architectural wonders that command attention. First is the massive five-story pagoda, one of the largest of its kind made of reinforced concrete. The main hall (Kondo), which houses the central deity, is modeled after the Great Buddha Hall of Todai-ji in Nara, matching the scale of the Todai-ji Nandaimon gate. Visitors can experience the beauty of traditional Japanese temple architecture by walking through the Chumon (Middle Gate) and Nanmon (South Gate). Additionally, the stroll garden features a diverse collection of stones and lanterns from across the country, offering a harmonious blend of nature and architecture.
Regardless of the season, a stroll through the expansive grounds allows you to enjoy the changing expressions of the garden. During the bright daylight hours, the scale and intricate details of the giant Buddha and the five-story pagoda are most clearly visible. The scenery of the garden shifts with the seasons, offering a different atmosphere and charm depending on when you visit.
Here, you can immerse yourself in Buddhist architecture within a peaceful environment. Looking up at the giant Vairocana Buddha is a singular, awe-inspiring experience. Walking through the stroll garden to observe the various stones and lanterns is also a precious opportunity to connect with Japanese garden culture. The area is near other major attractions, such as the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum. During peak seasons, the temple's parking lot is sometimes opened for museum visitors, and shuttle buses may even run between the two locations, making it easy to plan a combined sightseeing trip. The surrounding Katsuyama area also maintains a charming, historic atmosphere.
