Asumui Haikusu (formerly known as Oishi Rimzan) is a sacred site where history and nature converge, located within the Yanbaru National Park in northern Okinawa Island. It was officially rebranded as "Asumui Spiritual Hikes" on December 28, 2024. The landscape is characterized by a stunning karst topography, formed by the erosion of limestone over 250 million years (Paleozoic era), resulting in a dramatic display of massive rocks and unique stone formations. Beyond its physical beauty, it is a place that offers spiritual fulfillment, deeply rooted in Ryukyuan mythology.
This rocky mountain has been known since ancient times as "Asumui." According to Ryukyuan mythology, it is the sacred ground where the goddess Amamiku, the creator of the islands, first established the world. During the Ryukyu Kingdom era, royalty visited this site to pray for national prosperity, bountiful harvests, and safe voyages. Since the Meiji era, more than 60 sacred sites (utaki) for prayer have existed within this forest, where spiritual practitioners offered prayers. It remains a highly prestigious site where sacred traditions and nature live in harmony.
The greatest attraction is the unique karst topography shaped by rainwater erosion. The sight of towering, strangely shaped rocks and massive stones is a masterpiece of natural-sculpted beauty. This area is also a treasure trove of biodiversity; it serves as a vital habitat for the Yanbaru Kuina (Okinawa Rail), a Special Natural Monument, and many other endemic species. As you walk the well-maintained trails, you can witness the richness of this ecosystem up close.
The facility is open year-round, offering different natural expressions depending on the season. From spring to summer, the forest is filled with vibrant, lush energy. On clear days, the observation decks offer breathtaking views of Cape Hedo and, under perfect conditions, even the remote islands of the Amami archipelago (such as Yoron Island).
