Clematis no Oka is a unique cultural complex situated on the scenic slopes of Mt. Ashitaka in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture. This destination is a harmonious blend of art and nature, featuring the Bernard Buffet Museum, which showcases the works of the renowned French painter, and the Yasushi Inoue Literature Museum, dedicated to the life and works of the celebrated Japanese author. The complex also includes charming cafes and shops, creating a space where art, literature, and relaxation coexist beautifully.
The foundation of this facility dates back to November 1973, with the opening of the Bernard Buffet Museum and the Yasushi Inoue Literature Museum. The Bernard Buffet Museum houses a collection of works by the French painter, largely curated by Kiichiro Okano, and has expanded over the years with the addition of a new wing in 1988 and a print gallery in 1996. The connection between the local culture and the works of Yasushi Inoue provides a deep sense of historical continuity. For decades, this site has served as a vital hub for promoting art and literature in the region.

The experience at Clematis no Oka changes with the seasons. The museums offer a serene and contemplative environment, perfect for deep appreciation of art and literature regardless of the weather. Please note that while the area was once famous for the 'Clematis Garden,' that specific section closed in September 2023, so current visits focus primarily on the museums and the cafe facilities.
Visitors can engage in various cultural activities, such as contemplating masterpieces at the museum, exploring the literary legacy of Yasushi Inoue, or simply enjoying a quiet moment at the cafe.
