Chuguji is a temple of the Shodetsushu sect located in Ikaruga Town, Ikoma District, Nara Prefecture. It has a long history of being operated as a nunnery and is counted as one of the Yamato Sanmonji temples. The most significant feature is that it enshrines the Bodhisattva Pensive Statue (a National Treasure), which is celebrated as one of the world's three great smiling statues. Additionally, the temple holds precious cultural assets, such as the Tenjukoku Mandala Embroidered Scroll.
The temple is said to have been built on the site of a palace established by Prince Shotoku for his mother, Empress Anahobe no Yamato no Iratsume, and has historically been known as the Ikaruga Palace. Throughout its history, the temple has preserved numerous cultural treasures. One notable item is the 'Paper Monju Bosatsu Statue,' a rare paper-made Buddhist statue believed to date from the Kamakura period, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The most important highlight of Chuguji is the main deity, the Bodhisattva Pensive Statue. The figure, with its right leg crossed and right fingers gently touching the cheek, is famous as one of the world's three great smiling statues. Visitors can also view the 'Tenjukoku Mandala Embroidered Scroll,' which is said to depict the appearance of the heavenly land (Tenjuku) as described by Princess Tachibana no Oiratsume, the consort of Prince Shotoku, through replica exhibitions. Other treasures include the paper-made Monju Bosatsu statue and historical documents from the Nara period.
Chuguji reveals different expressions depending on the season. During spring and autumn, the temple's tranquil atmosphere is beautifully complemented by the surrounding natural environment. Please note that visiting hours vary by season. From March to the end of November, the temple is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. From December to the end of February, the hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Visiting in the early afternoon allows for a peaceful and contemplative experience.

In this silent and sacred space, you can observe the subtle expression of the National Treasure Bodhisattva Pensive Statue and the intricate craftsmanship of historical Buddhist art up close. Chuguji is surrounded by other historic temples such as Horyu-ji and Korin-ji. It is easily accessible from Horyu-ji via walking or bus, making it a perfect stop during a temple-hopping tour of the Ikaruga area. The area is also part of a route featuring various nunneries, allowing visitors to explore the historical landscape of the region.
