Bijinrin Forest is a breathtaking beech forest spanning approximately 3 hectares in the Matsunoyama district of Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture. The forest earned its name, "Bijinrin" (Beautiful Woman Forest), due to the elegant and graceful appearance of its 100-year-old beech trees. The history of this area is quite dramatic; during the late Taisho era, the area was completely deforested for charcoal production, leaving a barren mountain. However, the following year, the power of nature took over as beech trees spontaneously sprouted and grew simultaneously, creating the magnificent landscape seen today. It is a unique spot shaped by the incredible process of natural regeneration.
The history of this land dates back to the late Taisho era. At that time, the beech trees were entirely harvested for charcoal, leaving the mountain completely bare. Remarkably, just a year later, the power of nature caused the beech trees to sprout all at once, leading to the regeneration of the beautiful forest we see today. This dramatic rebirth and the slender, elegant silhouettes of the trees are the reasons behind the name "Bijinrin."
The greatest charm of Bijinrin is the changing expression of the beech trees with each season. You can enjoy different views depending on when you visit: fresh buds emerging from the snow in spring, vibrant greenery in summer, brilliant yellow and orange foliage in autumn, and a serene, white snowy landscape in winter. The area is also known for its rich biodiversity, serving as a habitat for many species of wild birds.
