The Chihiro Art Museum of Azumino, located in Matsukawa Village, Nagano Prefecture, is the world's first museum dedicated to the art of picture books. The architecture is designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment of Azumino, where the beauty of the Northern Alps' lingering snow and fresh greenery creates a harmonious setting. The museum showcases the original works of Chihiro Kitagawa alongside a precious collection of picture books by artists from across the globe. It is a space where nature, architecture, and the world of storytelling converge to offer a sense of profound tranquility.
This museum was established to preserve the works of the artist Chihiro Kitagawa and to pass on her spirit to future generations. The exhibited works are not merely paintings; they serve as important cultural records that tell the history of the picture book medium. By housing original works from diverse artists across Asia, Europe, and America, the museum serves as a cultural hub where visitors can learn about the diversity of expression in the world of picture books.
The museum features several themed exhibition rooms. Key areas include "Chihiro's Work," which focuses on her representative original drawings; "Chihiro's Life," which introduces her life journey chronologically; and "Picture Book Artists of the World," which displays works by international artists. Visitors can also explore historical materials regarding the history of picture books and enjoy special exhibitions that change seasonally. Additionally, the facility includes the "Picture Book Room," where you can browse approximately 3,000 books, and the "Children's Room," designed to nurture creativity, making it an engaging destination for all ages.
The landscape changes beautifully with the seasons. In spring, the contrast between the white snow of the Northern Alps and the fresh greenery is striking, while early summer brings a lush, vibrant green scenery. Standard opening hours are 10:00 to 17:00. However, during Golden Week (April 25 – May 6) and the Summer Season (July 18 – August 31), the opening time may change to 9:00. We recommend visiting at a leisurely pace to enjoy the shifting scenery and seasonal exhibitions.
Beyond viewing the exhibitions, you can immerse yourself in literature at the "Picture Book Room." The on-site cafe offers light meals and sweets made with local ingredients, as well as herbal teas, allowing you to savor the lingering emotions of the artwork while gazing at the Northern Alps. The museum shop offers a variety of goods inspired by the artworks. Depending on the season, the museum may also host workshops related to the creation of picture books.
The museum is situated in the nature-rich area of Azumino. Nearby facilities like Azumino Park are perfect for a relaxing stroll. To reach the museum, most visitors use a taxi from Shinano-Matsukawa Station (approx. 5 mins) or rent a bicycle (approx. 15 mins). Seasonal buses, such as the Azumino Enjoy Bus or Shinano-Omachi Loop Bus, are also available to connect the museum with other local sightseeing spots.
