Awajiga Pass (Awajiga-tō) is a mountain located at an altitude of 273 meters in Hatadera-cho, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. Situated at the edge of the Kawanawa mountain range, it borders the Matsuyama Plain, which allows for an exceptionally wide and unobstructed view despite its modest height. The summit is equipped with a small gazebo and an observation deck, offering a magnificent panoramic view of Matsuyama City and the Seto Inland Sea on clear days. It is a cherished local spot, frequently used as a destination for field trips by local elementary and junior high schools.
The area holds a rich history, dating back approximately 400 years to when a fortress for Yuzuki Castle (the site of the current Dogo Park) was located nearby. It is said that the name "Awaji Castle" originated from the lord of that fortress, Hayashi Awaji-no-kami Michitoki, which eventually led to the names "Awaji Pass" and "Awaji Mountain." Interestingly, there is a historical connection to the 11th descendant of this lineage, Ito Hirobumi, a prominent figure in Japanese politics. The scenery of this mountain is even woven into the school anthems of local elementary and junior high schools, demonstrating how deeply rooted this landscape is in the lives of the community.
The greatest attraction is the view from the observation deck at the summit. Because the surrounding trees have been cleared, there are very few obstructions to the view, allowing visitors to observe the vastness of Matsuyama City and the calm beauty of the Seto Inland Sea from a high vantage point. There are multiple hiking trails available, allowing you to choose a route that suits your preference while feeling immersed in nature. The paths are well-maintained with signposts, log stairs, and benches, making it easy to navigate based on topographical maps. The gazebo at the summit serves as an excellent resting spot during your hike.
Awajiga Pass reveals different beautiful faces throughout the seasons. In spring, you can enjoy the sight of cherry blossoms planted around the area. In autumn, it is well-known for its vibrant foliage. For the best experience, visiting during twilight is highly recommended, as you can witness the changing colors of the sky over the cityscape. Please note that the condition of the trails and the availability of certain paths may change depending on the season and weather, so checking local conditions in advance is advised.
This is an ideal spot for light hiking and walking. There are several routes to choose from, including a path ascending from behind Bandaji Temple and other routes maintained by local residents. Even for beginners, the hike is quite accessible, with the ascent to the summit taking approximately one hour. The variety of paths, including some that utilize the terrain near power line inspection routes, offers a diverse walking experience.
The foot of the mountain is home to Kuwabara Elementary and Junior High Schools, serving as a community hub. You can also combine your hike with a visit to nearby temples, as hiking routes extend from the rear of Bandaji Temple. Since it is relatively close to central Matsuyama, it is easy to incorporate this visit into a broader sightseeing itinerary in the city.
Please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes suitable for hiking. While the course is relatively short, some sections may have uneven terrain or interrupted maintenance, so please watch your step. As there are no shops nearby, please be prepared to handle any incidental needs independently. Since the summit is a public natural space, please follow the rule of taking all your trash home with you and respect the environment. English signage is limited, so we recommend checking your route in advance.
