The Sakura trees along the Sezawa River (Nakayama River Park) is a stunning cherry blossom destination located at the foot of Mt. Chokai in Yuza Town, Yamagata Prefecture. Approximately 60 Somei Yoshino trees line the left bank of the river, forming a breathtaking avenue. What makes this spot truly special is the harmony between the blossoms and the traditional landscape. Unlike modern concrete embankments, this area preserves historic stone walls and a scenery of traditional black-tiled roofs and white walls typical of the Shonai region. With the snow-capped Mt. Chokai standing majestically in the background, the view is a perfect blend of nature and history.
The cherry blossom path holds significant historical value. The trees were originally planted in 1959 to commemorate the wedding of the then Crown Prince (the current Emperor of Japan). Out of the original 60 trees, 58 remain vibrant and healthy today. With an age of approximately 60 years, these trees serve as a living testament to the community's dedication to preserving their heritage and cultural identity.
The most iconic view is the seamless integration of the flowing river, the rugged stone embankments, and the soft pink canopy of the Somei Yoshino blossoms. During full bloom, the contrast between the white-pink flowers and the grand presence of Mt. Chokai is unforgettable. The surrounding traditional architecture, featuring black tiles and white walls, offers a glimpse into old Japan. During the 'Nakayama River Park Sakura Festival,' visitors can enjoy the sight of Koinobori (carp streamers) floating on the river and the enchanting glow of traditional lanterns during night illuminations.
The peak viewing season is around mid-April. During this time, you can witness the spectacular sight of cherry blossoms accompanied by Koinobori floating on the river. While the daytime offers brilliant colors and clear views of Mt. Chokai, the evening brings a magical atmosphere with 'bonbori' lantern illuminations, making a night stroll highly recommended.
Most visitors enjoy a peaceful stroll through nature and history. You can walk along the riverbank, observe the intricate stone masonry, and admire the traditional houses. During spring festivals, the experience becomes more visual and cultural with the light-up events and the sight of carp streamers. Even a short 30-minute visit allows you to fully absorb the density and beauty of this scenic landscape.
The area around Yuza Town is rich with natural and cultural landmarks, including shrines related to Mt. Chokai and beautiful coastal scenery. It is an excellent destination for a scenic drive or a walking tour. The site is conveniently located about a 10-minute drive from Yuza Station, making it an easy stop during your travels through Yamagata.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes as you will be strolling along the riverbank and embankments. While paths are generally well-maintained, some areas may have uneven surfaces due to the natural terrain. Please be aware that cash is often necessary for nearby facilities or parking. English-language signage is limited in the area. When taking photos, please respect the privacy of local residents and follow public etiquette. Regarding accessibility, while there are paths along the embankment, please be mindful of potential steps or slopes.
