Ani Keikoku (Ani Valley) is a breathtaking natural destination located in Niyodocho, Agawa District, Kochi Prefecture. It is renowned as one of the premier spots to witness the famous 'Niyodo Blue,' characterized by its incredibly transparent waters that shift from emerald green to deep blue. The landscape is a dynamic display of nature, featuring dramatic cliffs carved by limestone erosion and a variety of massive rocks and stones scattered throughout the terrain. Surrounded by lush forests, the valley offers a different, beautiful face with every season.
The natural beauty of this area has been carefully preserved for generations. Located upstream of the Ani River, the environment has remained largely untouched, maintaining its pristine state over many years. A culture of living in harmony with nature is deeply rooted in this region, and the breathtaking scenery is a source of great local pride. There are numerous spectacular sights within Ani Keikoku. The most iconic is the 'Hiryu Falls' (Flying Dragon Falls), a powerful two-tiered waterfall with a 30-meter drop. The name originates from the way the water flows, resembling a dragon twisting its body as it takes flight. Another must-see is 'Suisho-fuchi' (Crystal Pool), where the colors of the water change depending on the season and time of day. You can also enjoy the view of 'Mikaeri Falls' from the roadside. The ability to see every stone and pebble at the bottom of the crystal-clear water is a truly unique experience found only here.
The best way to experience the valley changes with the seasons. From spring to summer, the emerald green waters and lush greenery create a refreshing and cool atmosphere. In autumn, the surrounding forest transforms into vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a stunning contrast against the blue water. Some visitors also enjoy nature-based activities like fishing for Amego (sweetfish) in the surrounding areas. There is also a facility called 'Horaiso,' which serves as both a dining area and lodging, making it a great base for your exploration. Immersing yourself in the silence of the valley and the sound of flowing water is a perfect way to escape daily life.
The area around Ani Keikoku is filled with spots to enjoy the great outdoors, including campsites and bungalows for an immersive nature stay. It is also easily accessible from other sightseeing spots in the Niyodo River area, making it an ideal destination for driving or touring. The roads leading to the valley offer many scenic viewpoints along the way.
