Ankokuji is a historic temple located in the scenic Tomonoura area of Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Established during the Muromachi period, the temple is characterized by its grand architecture and exquisite gardens, which symbolize the wealth and influence of the merchants of that era. The Shakado Hall, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, stands as a testament to its high historical value. Visitors can immerse themselves in the tranquil atmosphere while appreciating the refined beauty of traditional Japanese architecture and Zen garden culture.
The history of this temple is deeply rooted in the past, with legends connecting it to Ashikaga Takauji, the first shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate. At one time, it was known as Kinpo-ji, and its changing names tell a story of long-standing historical transitions. The luxurious architectural styles found here serve as evidence of the economic prosperity of the merchants in Tomonoura during that period. Every corner of the buildings and gardens reflects the social structure and cultural richness of ancient Japan.

During the cherry blossom season, the Sakura trees in front of the Shakado Hall are beautifully illuminated, creating a magical night-viewing experience. The temple is also famous for its autumn colors, where approximately 100 maple trees paint the grounds in vibrant hues. During the day, you can observe the intricate details of the Zen garden under the sunlight, while at dusk, the atmosphere shifts into a deep, meditative silence.
