The Akashi City Astronomical Science Museum is a science museum located in Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture, centered around the themes of "Time and Space." The most distinctive feature is its location directly on the 135° East longitude line, which marks the Japan Standard Time (JST) meridian. The museum's landmark is a striking 56-meter tall tower clock with a 40-meter observation deck, serving as a beloved symbol of Akashi. It is a facility where visitors can learn about the mechanics of the universe and the history of time through various exhibits and programs, including a planetarium and advanced astronomical observation equipment.
Opened in 1960, this museum is known as one of the earliest astronomical science museums in Japan. Throughout its history, it has faced significant events, such as damage during the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, leading to its grand reopening in 1998. The iconic tower clock was a gift from Seiko Holdings; the current clock is the third generation. While the previous two generations stopped at the exact moment of the earthquake, the current clock has been repaired and modernized with LED technology to continue keeping precise time. The building itself serves as a vital cultural symbol for the local community.
The museum features diverse exhibits regarding the solar system and various astronomical materials. A special highlight is the planetarium, which sometimes offers unique programs combining traditional manual projection with modern auxiliary projectors. On the 16th floor, there is an astronomical observation room equipped with a 40cm diameter reflecting telescope. The museum hosts astronomical observation sessions approximately once a month, providing rare opportunities to observe actual celestial bodies. Additionally, the exhibits focusing on the 'concept of time'—including the marker for the Japan Standard Time meridian and historical documents regarding clocks—are truly unique.
While astronomical observation is primarily a nighttime activity, the museum hosts observation events about once a month. If you plan to participate in these sessions, it is essential to check the nighttime schedule in advance. Depending on the season, there may also be special exhibits or events tailored to specific celestial phenomena. Since planetarium programs are frequently held during the daytime, this facility is easy to incorporate into a daytime sightseeing itinerary.
