Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Bridge World, located in Suma-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, is a facility dedicated to teaching the technology and history of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. It is much more than just a viewpoint; it is an engineering hub where visitors can deeply understand the structure and construction history of this iconic bridge. Within the bridge structure on the Kobe side, you will find the "Maiko Sea Promenade." Here, you can take an elevator up to a height of 47 meters above sea level. From there, you can walk approximately 150 meters toward the sea, and through certain sections with transparent flooring, you can look directly down at the ocean below, offering a thrilling perspective.
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is a representative suspension bridge of Japan that began service in 1998. During its construction, the bridge faced a major challenge when the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake struck. Although the earthquake caused a displacement in the seabed that lengthened the bridge by about 1 meter, construction successfully continued. This historical event serves as a testament to the incredible strength and advanced engineering of the bridge. Also known as the "Pearl Bridge," it is a beloved symbol of beautiful night views in the region.
The greatest attraction is the opportunity to feel the scale of the bridge through exhibits and observation decks. At the Bridge Science Museum, you can see a 1/100 scale model used for wind tunnel testing and various displays regarding bridge technology. Additionally, there are special events called "Bridge World" held for a limited number of participants, which allow you to climb the main towers or access maintenance walkways that are usually off-limits to the public. This is a rare and precious experience that lets you feel the sheer scale of this massive engineering masterpiece.
The illumination of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge changes its colors depending on the season and time. On weekdays, the colors are set to change by season: green in spring, blue in summer, red in autumn, and yellow in winter. On Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, the lights stay on until midnight. Furthermore, at every full hour and half-hour, special light patterns inspired by rainbows or birthstones are displayed. You can enjoy the dynamic shape of the bridge accompanied by these beautiful light shows.
Inside the facility, you can learn about the scientific principles of the bridge. The Bridge Science Museum even sells actual samples of the wire strands used in the cables, allowing you to realize the immense strength required to support such a giant structure. Walking through the Maiko Sea Promenade provides the sensation of walking directly above the sea. The view through the transparent floor is a unique experience that you can only find here.
The surrounding area offers magnificent views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. From the Kobe side, you can take beautiful photographs with the massive scale of the bridge as your backdrop. As an important route connecting Honshu and Shikoku, the surrounding transportation network is well-developed, making this a very convenient location for a sightseeing base.
