Ritual of Sumiharai (Year-end Purification, Joya-sai, New Year's First Drum, and Saitan-sai)

Event Overview

Tamaki Jinja holds special sacred rituals from the end of the year to the beginning of the new year to celebrate the closing of one year and the start of the next. These are not merely events, but important ceremonies to cleanse the 'sins' and 'impurities' accumulated in daily life, allowing one to welcome the new year with a pure heart. These rituals are highly prestigious and part of the World Heritage site 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range'.

Highlights and How to Enjoy

The greatest charm of this period is the chance to feel the traditional Japanese spirituality firsthand. First, during the 'Year-end Purification' (Toshi no Koe Oharai) on December 31st, a ritual is performed to transfer impurities to dolls, cleansing the mind and body. This is followed by the 'Joya-sai', a solemn ceremony to conclude the year.

The highlight of welcoming the new year is the 'Shinshun Ichiban Daiko' (New Year's First Drum). From New Year's Eve until midnight on January 1st, participants can strike the drum 108 times each. The powerful sound of the drum serves as a majestic announcement of the new year. Additionally, a special feature is offered where the first 108 people receive a special New Year's Ema (votive tablet).

From 7:00 AM on New Year's Day, the 'Saitan-sai' is held to offer prayers for a fresh and prosperous new year.

The rituals are held in stages from New Year's Eve to New Year's Day. The schedule is as follows:

Tamaki Jinja is a sacred site located deep in the mountains of Nara Prefecture. While the environment is incredibly serene and beautiful, careful planning for access is essential.

As public transportation is limited, it is highly recommended to check bus schedules or arrange for a car or taxi in advance.

Participation Tips

Participation in these rituals requires silence and respect. The 'Shinshun Ichiban Daiko' is a particularly rare experience where you can strike the drum yourself, allowing for a deep understanding of Japanese prayer traditions. Please note that special items like Ema are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early is advised.

Items to Bring, Clothing, and Etiquette

Please keep the following points in mind when participating in the rituals:

• *Clothing**: The shrine is located in a mountainous area, and temperatures are extremely low during the New Year period. Please prepare heavy coats, heat packs (kairo), and warm clothing.
