Event Overview

Located at Iida Hachiman Shrine in Ogano-machi, Saitama, the "Teppo Matsuri" (Gun Festival) is a heroic event that marks the end of the season in the Chichibu region. Held annually on the second Sunday of December and the preceding day, this festival is characterized by the thunderous sounds of matchlock guns used during sacred rituals to pray for bountiful harvests and good health. It is designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Saitama Prefecture, serving as a vital way to preserve and pass down local history and traditions.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight of this festival is the main ritual known as "Otachi" (Gunfire Offering). Amidst the deafening cracks and smoke from matchlock guns fired from both sides of the approach, two sacred horses gallop up the stone steps toward the shrine. This sight is incredibly dynamic and breathtakingly powerful.

Additionally, during the festival, the "Iida Yatai" float and the "Hachiman Shrine Kasako" will be paraded through the town. The Iida Yatai features a built-up stage where "Ogano Kabuki"—a designated intangible folk cultural property—is performed. The sight of the elaborately decorated floats and performers in traditional costumes offers a perfect opportunity to experience the aesthetic beauty of Japanese tradition.

【Access Information】

• From Seibu Chichibu Station or Chichibu Station, take the Seibu Kanko Bus bound for "Kurio" and get off at the "Kurio" bus stop. It is approximately a 10-minute walk from there.
• From Seibu Chichibu Station, take the Seibu Kanko Bus bound for "Ogano Shako" and get off at the "Ogano Yakuba" bus stop.

Tips for Visitors

The "Otachi" ritual is extremely intense; due to the loud gunshots and smoke, those sensitive to noise or smoke are advised to watch from a slight distance. The festival offers various ways to enjoy it, such as watching the float parades or Kabuki performances. As this is a significant cultural heritage site, please observe the local traditions and customs with respect.
