Bugaku Hounou is a sacred dance offering held annually on November 3rd at Yasaka Shrine. The ritual's origins date back to 975 AD, established to pray for the recovery of Emperor In'yo. Though interrupted during history, it was revived by Emperor Komei and is currently performed by the Yasaka Gakukai.
Bugaku is a form of traditional dance accompanied by Gagaku (ancient court music). It includes styles such as 'Samai' (Left Dance) accompanied by Togaku music, and 'Umai' (Right Dance) accompanied by Komagaku music. During this offering, the dance unfolds to the powerful resonance of large drums at the south side of the dance stage.
The main feature is the authentic Bugaku performance by the Yasaka Gakukai. The ritual begins with the 'Enbu' (purification dance) and concludes with 'Chokeishi' (musical performance only). The combination of the deep drum beats and the elegant melodies creates a profound, spiritual atmosphere.
This is a rare opportunity to witness traditional Japanese musical forms—such as Seigaiha and Manzairaku—performed within the sacred space of a historic shrine.
