Event Overview

The Aoshima Sea Crossing Festival is a traditional ritual passed down through generations in the Aoshima area of Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture. The most striking feature of this festival is the 'crossing of the sea.' Organized by young locals aged 22-23, the 'Kaisho Togyo' involves carrying the portable shrine (Mikoshi) on a fishing boat to circle the island.

This tradition began in 1948, born from the strong desire of local fishermen to honor the deity and bring the spirit to the Umitsumi-no-miya shrine. The sight of dozens of fishing boats, led by the 'Gozabune' (the main boat carrying the shrine) and decorated with vibrant 'Mankankazari' (large fishing flags), creates a magnificent spectacle that allows visitors to feel the direct energy of the sea and the local community.
