Tenjin Matsuri is the annual festival of Osaka Tenmangu and is considered one of the "Three Great Festivals of Japan," alongside Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri. With a history spanning over 1,000 years, it is a dynamic series of rituals truly worthy of the name "Festival of Fire and Water." The 2026 edition is particularly special, as the main day, July 25, falls on a rare "triple auspicious day" where Saturday, Daian, and Daimyojitsu all coincide. This makes it a highly significant event attracting visitors from around the world.
The charm of Tenjin Matsuri lies in the grand processions on both land and water, accompanied by beautiful traditional rituals.
First, during the Yoimiya (Eve) on July 24, the "Hokoryu Ritual" takes place, where white wooden floats are released into the river to the sound of "Hokorouta" music. The sight of the white floats drifting down the Dojima River is a mystical way to begin the festivities.
On the main day, July 25, the climax arrives with the magnificent "Funatogyo" (Boat Procession). Nearly 100 boats line the river, creating a breathtaking scene with lanterns reflecting on the water. As night falls, approximately 4,000 fireworks are launched into the sky. The fusion of the boat procession on the water and the fireworks in the sky is the essence of the "Festival of Fire and Water," offering an overwhelming and moving experience.

Access: The nearest stations are JR Osaka Loop Line "Osaka Tenmangu Station" and Keihan Line "Tenmabashi Station." Due to heavy congestion, the use of public transportation is strongly recommended.
Planning ahead is key to enjoying the festival. If you wish to see the fireworks up close on the 25th, we recommend arriving early or considering purchasing paid spectator seats, as it will be extremely crowded. Since 2026 coincides with a Saturday and an auspicious calendar date, expect even larger crowds than usual. It is also wise to research open areas along the river in advance to enjoy the view of the lantern-lit boats.
