The Goshinkosai is a vital summer ritual (Natsu Koshi Oiwai) held at Usa Jingu Shrine in Usa City, Oita Prefecture. This festival boasts a profound history dating back to the Heian period. At one time, it was known for its intense and spirited atmosphere. The sight of the three deities riding in their respective divine palanquins (mikoshi) as they travel from the main shrine area to the Tonkuya shrine is truly a breathtaking spectacle.
The greatest charm of this festival is the magnificent procession. You will see Shinto priests and officials dressed in traditional historical attire, accompanied by young musicians playing traditional music, as they parade alongside the three divine palanquins. The movement of the deities descending to the Tonkuya area and the subsequent return creates a deeply sacred atmosphere.
On August 1st, the middle day of the festival, the "Yabusame" (horseback archery) ritual will be performed at the Daiozan approach, following the strict traditions of the Ogasawara school. This is a rare opportunity to witness traditional martial arts up close. Furthermore, on the night of August 2nd, the "Yakuyoke Fireworks Display" will take place, brilliantly concluding the sacred festivities. The essence of Goshinkosai lies in experiencing both the solemnity of the Shinto rituals and the vibrant beauty of the fireworks.
The festival takes place over three days from July 31st to August 2nd every year.
The event is held at and around the grounds of Usa Jingu Shrine in Usa City, Oita Prefecture.
Goshinkosai is not merely an event, but a sacred ritual preceded by strict purification rites by the priests. When observing the historical costumes and traditional ceremonies, it is best to respect the sacred atmosphere and observe quietly. Please pay close attention to the movement of the procession during the "O-kudari" and "O-agari" segments.
As the festival is held in mid-summer, we recommend bringing a hat, plenty of water for hydration, and wearing breathable clothing to prevent heatstroke. Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for watching the horseback archery and fireworks.
