The Zuiryu-ji Temple Light-up (officially titled 'Kosai Rikuri') is a special nighttime illumination event held during the spring at the National Treasure Zuiryu-ji Temple in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. The main draw is the 'art of light and sound'—a mesmerizing spectacle where colorful, five-colored lights are synchronized with carefully selected original musical compositions. The sight of these vibrant colors illuminating the serene Zen temple creates a mystical atmosphere that allows visitors to escape everyday life. Notably, the event is also designed with environmental consciousness, utilizing renewable energy sources.
Zuiryu-ji is a prestigious Zen temple established in the early Edo period, and its architectural beauty is officially recognized as a National Treasure of Japan. The orderly layout of the temple buildings (Garan) symbolizes the spiritual essence of Zen Buddhism, carrying immense historical weight. This event is held primarily during the spring (late April to early May) as a special nighttime viewing. During the event period, the temple reveals a completely different face from the daytime, typically open from approximately 18:00 to 21:00. The most dramatic scenery occurs during the transition from dusk to night, as the lights intensify and the colors shift. We recommend checking the latest information before your visit, as schedules and times may change due to weather or seasonal adjustments.
Beyond simple viewing, the event offers a multi-sensory experience. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere while listening to original compositions like 'Genso Zuiryu-ji' (Mystical Zuiryu-ji) or 'Spring Arrival.'
