During a specific period in spring, the grounds of the Japan Mint Hiroshima Branch are opened to the public for the "Hana-no-Mawari-Michi" (Flower Path) event. During this time, the Mint's exhibition room showcases a fascinating collection, including large gold and silver coins (Oban and Koban), various currencies manufactured from the early Meiji era to the present day, and exquisite metal crafts such as medals and Olympic commemorative items. It is a unique location where you can feel the passage of time through both history and the changing seasons.
The cherry trees at the Japan Mint were transplanted from the Osaka Mint to the Hiroshima Branch in 1967. Two years after the transplant, they bloomed for the first time, and since then, the trees have been beloved by staff and local residents alike. In April 1991, as part of the 120th anniversary of the Japan Mint, the "Hana-no-Mawari-Michi – Yaezakura in Hiroshima" event was launched to open the grounds to the public. This has made the site a symbol of spring in Hiroshima.
In the Coin Exhibition Room, you can experience the rich history of Japanese currency culture. The collection includes everything from ancient coins like Oban and Koban to diverse sets of currency from the Meiji era to the modern day, as well as gold, silver, and bronze Olympic medals and highly detailed metal crafts. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking view of the double-flowered cherry blossoms (Yaezakura) blooming across the premises during the event period.
The main season for "Hana-no-Mawari-Michi" is from March to April. To fully appreciate the highlight of this event, it is highly recommended to visit when the double-flowered cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Visiting hours during the event are from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (last entry at 3:45 PM). As this is a seasonal event, please check the official opening dates in advance.
A special sales booth is set up on-site during the event, where you can purchase coin sets and metal crafts. This is a rare opportunity to see the precision of the Japan Mint's craftsmanship up close. Please note that regular factory tours are suspended during the "Hana-no-Mawari-Michi" period, so the focus is primarily on the coin exhibitions and the cherry blossom scenery.
The Japan Mint Hiroshima Branch is located in the Itsukaichi area on the western side of Hiroshima City. The surrounding area consists of residential and commercial districts, making it easily accessible via public transportation. You can reach the area from central Hiroshima using buses or trains.
The entire premises are non-smoking. Eating and drinking are prohibited on the grounds. Please refrain from entering with bicycles, as walking is the primary way to move around the site. Pets are generally not allowed, with the exception of service animals. Please be aware that the event may be canceled or changed in the event of bad weather.
