The event unfolds over several days with a diverse program. On Friday evenings, the "Opening Parade" kicks off the festivities, parading through central Toyama with high-spirited music. Saturday features an opening ceremony at Grand Plaza, preliminary rounds at the Toyama Prefectural Hall, and special evening performances. The climax occurs on Sunday, featuring the professional division finals followed by the "Grand Parade." Watching the professional and amateur Chindon performers march through bustling areas like Heiwa-dori and Oote Mall while playing music is a truly breathtaking spectacle.
The event takes place annually in April, a beautiful time to experience the arrival of spring in Toyama. Because the parade routes and stage contents change depending on the time of day from Friday evening through Sunday night, we highly recommend checking the official schedule in advance to catch the most energetic parade moments. Please note that in the event of rain, parade routes may be changed or activities may be canceled.
As a spectator, you can experience Chindon performances up close. The rhythmic sounds of the instruments, the energetic shouts of the performers, and their unique, colorful costumes offer a direct, visceral connection to traditional Japanese street culture.
