Zengoro Falls is a breathtaking natural landmark located in Azumi, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Situated at the foot of the majestic Mt. Norikura, the falls are located approximately 250m downstream from Suzuran Bridge on the Ko-ono River. The waterfall boasts a striking drop of about 22 meters and a width of roughly 8 meters, creating a powerful and rhythmic flow of water. This site is designated as a Special Scenic Spot by the city, cherished as a vital symbol of the area's natural beauty and geological splendor.
This waterfall is historically significant as one of the famous 'Norikura San-taki' (Three Norikura Waterfalls). There are even theories suggesting that this area once served as a site for mountain asceticism (Shugendo), where practitioners would engage in spiritual training under the shadow of Mt. Norikura. This adds a layer of spiritual depth to the site, representing not just a natural wonder, but a cultural landscape shaped by a deep reverence for the mountains.

The greatest appeal of Zengoro Falls is the seamless integration of the waterfall with the grand silhouette of Mt. Norikura. As you look up at the cascading water, the majestic mountain range stretches out behind it, offering a profound sense of scale and natural grandeur. Visitors can also enjoy observing the unique geological patterns on the riverbed downstream, where the forces of nature have sculpted the landscape into a beautiful work of art.
The waterfall presents a different face to visitors depending on the season. The scenery changes beautifully with the shifting vegetation and water volume. During the bright daylight hours, you can witness the sparkling interplay of sunlight and water spray. Visiting during seasons of lush greenery provides a stunning contrast between the deep forest colors and the white, rushing water.
A viewing platform is available near the falls, allowing visitors to slow down and listen to the soothing sound of falling water. It is an ideal spot for a relaxing stroll, meditation, or photography. Immersing yourself in the sounds of the forest and the roar of the falls provides a perfect way to disconnect from the bustle of daily life and find mental refreshment.
The surrounding area is dotted with various spots to enjoy the great outdoors. Nearby, you can find recreational facilities such as 'Norikura BASE' (Igaya Recreation Land), making this a convenient destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Well-maintained paths in the vicinity allow for pleasant explorations of the local natural environment.
As this is a natural site, the ground around the falls may be damp or slippery. We highly recommend wearing sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. To preserve this beautiful environment, please follow local etiquette: take all trash home with you and do not disturb the local flora or fauna. Respecting the natural surroundings ensures this site remains pristine for future visitors.
