The Sendai Johzenji Street Jazz Festival is a premier music event held around Johzenji-dori in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Driven by the philosophy that "the city is the stage" and "music should overflow every genre," the entire urban landscape becomes a musical venue. The music spans a wide variety of genres, including jazz, rock, gospel, and popular music. It is one of Japan's largest street music festivals, attracting a diverse lineup of professional and amateur musicians from both within Japan and abroad.
The festival's first iteration was held in 1991. It evolved from jazz performances held at the L-Park Sendai fashion building between 1987 and 1990. The concept grew from a desire to bring music under the iconic zelkova trees lining Johzenji-dori, transitioning into the current large-scale outdoor format. Today, the event is sustained by citizen volunteers, donations, and corporate sponsorships, firmly establishing itself as a quintessential autumn tradition for the people of Sendai.
Approximately 100 stages are set up throughout the city, including Johzenji-dori, Kotobaidai Park, Ichibancho, Nishi Park, Aoba-dori, the Sendai Station West Exit pedestrian deck, and even the outdoor entrances of various buildings. Because the street corners themselves serve as stages, the distance between performers and the audience is incredibly intimate, allowing you to feel the energy of the music up close. Visitors can enjoy the performances while sipping drinks or enjoying snacks from various open-air cafes and "world kitchen" food stalls.
The festival is typically held on the second Sunday of September and the day preceding it. It is a wonderful time to feel the arrival of autumn alongside the beautiful cityscape of Sendai. As a massive event attracting approximately 700,000 visitors over two days, the streets are incredibly lively and bustling with people during the daytime.
Beyond just listening, the best way to experience the festival is to wander through the city, discovering new stages as you walk. The proximity to the performers at street-side stages allows you to experience the raw heat and passion of live performances. You can easily blend your musical journey with a stroll through the city, stopping at local cafes and restaurants to refuel.
The event covers a wide area in central Sendai, centered around Johzenji-dori and extending to Kotobaidai Park, Nishi Park, Aoba-dori, and the pedestrian decks around Sendai Station. This allows visitors to explore various local shops, restaurants, and commercial facilities while enjoying the musical atmosphere.
During the festival, certain sections of Johzenji-dori undergo traffic restrictions to create a pedestrian-friendly environment. Since you will be walking between many different stages, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
