Zao Onsen Ski Resort is located in Zao Onsen, Yamagata City, and stands as one of Japan's most iconic ski destinations. Spanning the western foot of Mount Zao, it boasts one of the largest continuous ski areas in Japan. The primary attraction is the world-famous "Snow Monsters" (Juhyo) that appear during winter. The vast ski area spreads out in a fan shape from the mountain summit, offering a diverse range of terrain and courses. At Zao Onsen Ski Resort, you can experience different seasonal charms. The frost-covered trees (Juhyo) are a must-see, particularly from January to February. From the summit station observation deck, you can overlook the vast expanse of the snow monsters and even experience moving through the snow-covered landscape. Additionally, from late December to late February, a special night illumination event is held, where the trees are brilliantly lit up, creating a truly magical atmosphere. Even if you are not skiing or snowboarding, riding the ropeway to enjoy the scenery is a highly popular way to sightsee.
The best season to visit is from December to March, with January and February being the peak months to see the most beautiful frost-covered trees. While daytime skiing is wonderful, the night illumination offers a unique and special experience. Please note that weather conditions at the upper areas can change rapidly, and fog may occur, so be mindful of visibility. Since operating hours vary by slope, we recommend checking the schedule in advance.
The vast resort offers a variety of courses suitable for everyone from beginners to experts. For example, the "Yokokura no Kabe" and "Chuo no Kabe" are steep, challenging courses designed for advanced skiers with high technical skills. Conversely, there are plenty of beginner-friendly areas, making it easy to enjoy the snow regardless of your level. Even visitors without any skiing or snowboarding equipment can enjoy the breathtaking views near the summit by using the ropeway.
The area surrounding the ski resort features a charming, historic hot spring town. A classic way to spend your day is to enjoy activities on the slopes and then relax in the hot springs. The Zao Onsen area in Yamagata City is well-equipped with various accommodations and restaurants, making it an ideal base for your winter adventures in Yamata.
The summit area in winter is extremely cold and can experience harsh weather conditions. Thorough cold-weather protection is essential. When viewing the frost-covered trees, please ensure you are wearing appropriate heavy-duty winter clothing. Additionally, skiing or snowboarding outside of designated courses is strictly prohibited. Please follow all rules and enjoy yourself within the safe, designated areas.
