Guide
Zao Heartland is a scenic ranch located in Zao Town, Miyagi Prefecture, centered around the beauty of nature and high-quality dairy products. Operated by the Zao Dairy Center, this destination allows visitors to taste incredibly fresh milk, cheese, and soft-serve ice cream right at the source. The facility features various areas including animal interaction zones, hands-on workshop centers, a cozy cafe, and a BBQ house, offering a diverse range of ways to enjoy the highland atmosphere.
The Zao area has a long-standing tradition of dairy farming, utilizing its rich natural environment to produce high-quality dairy products. Zao Heartland preserves this heritage by providing a space where visitors can connect directly with the local dairy culture. Through activities like cheese making and enjoying local specialties, the ranch serves as a bridge between traditional farming and modern tourism.

The ranch is home to several key facilities. The Hands-on Experience Center offers workshops where you can make your own cheese, butter, or ice cream. For a quick treat, the Takeout Center sells rich soft-serve ice cream and fresh milk. For a relaxing break, the cafe "Wind Square" offers a cozy log-cabin atmosphere with freshly roasted coffee. If you are feeling hungry, the "Wind Deck" BBQ house allows you to enjoy premium local meats, such as Zao-produced pork (JAPANX) and Japanese beef, while breathing in the fresh mountain air.
Zao Heartland is open from early April to late November; please note that the facility is closed during the winter season (November to April). The best time to visit is from May, when the fresh greenery is vibrant, through the pleasant summer months, and into the colorful autumn season. While daytime is perfect for animal interactions and workshops, the cafe and BBQ areas offer a peaceful way to unwind and soak in the tranquil highland scenery.
Visitors can enjoy unique activities that are hard to find in daily life. The workshop center provides hands-on programs for making cheese, butter, sausages, and ice cream. Depending on the season, you may also encounter special events like animal interactions or miniature horse displays. As some programs may require advanced booking, it is recommended to check the official website in advance.
Zao Heartland is conveniently located near the Zao Echo Line and the Togatta Onsen hot spring area. This makes it an excellent stop for travelers exploring the region via scenic drives. The ranch is easily accessible from major routes via the Shiroishi, Murata, or Kawasaki ICs, making it a great base for exploring the wider Zao mountain area.
As the ranch is set in a natural environment, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing that allows for easy movement, especially if you plan to participate in workshops or interact with animals. For payments at the shop or cafe, please check the current status of accepted methods on-site. If you wish to participate in specific experience programs, please confirm reservation requirements through the official website or by phone.
