The Zao Echo Line is a scenic mountain road that traverses the Zao Mountain Range, connecting Shiroishi City in Miyagi Prefecture with Kaminoyama City in Yamagata Prefecture. Opened in 1962, this road is characterized by its dynamic landscapes shaped by dramatic elevation changes. Visitors can experience the diverse expressions of nature through driving: the spectacular 'Snow Walls' that appear right after the road opens in spring, the lush greenery of summer, and the vivid colors of autumn foliage.
The route began operations on the Miyagi side on July 15, 1962, with the full route opening in November of the same year. While it once operated as a toll road, it became free of charge in 1985. Today, it serves as a vital scenic artery connecting the regions and symbolizing the natural beauty of the Zao Mountain Range. Please note that the road is closed during the winter season (from early November to late April) due to heavy snowfall.
The greatest appeal of the Zao Echo Line is its seasonal transformations. From late April to mid-May, the route is famous for the 'Snow Corridor,' where massive walls of snow stand high on both sides of the road. In summer, the landscape is filled with vibrant greenery, and from late September to late October, you can enjoy a beautiful color gradient as the autumn foliage descends from the mountain peaks toward the base. Additionally, near Katta Pass, the highest point at 1,606 meters, the landscape opens up to reveal rugged, expansive views.
The scenery changes significantly depending on the season. Spring (late April to mid-May) is perfect for seeing the powerful snow walls. Summer (June to August) offers refreshing views of lush greenery and cooler high-altitude air. Autumn (late September to late October) provides some of the most beautiful scenery with the changing colors of the leaves. As the road is closed during winter (November to April), always check the opening status before your visit.
The primary way to enjoy this route is via a scenic drive. The experience of driving through changing elevations and witnessing seasonal wonders like the snow walls is unique to this location. During the peak snow wall season, specialized tours such as 'Snow Wall Walks' may also be organized by travel agencies.
The areas surrounding the Zao Echo Line feature many natural spots and tourist hubs. On the Miyagi side, you can find various waterfalls (such as Fudo Falls, Jizo Falls, and Fuki no Taki) and Komakusahei, which offers views toward Sendai. On the Yamagata side and along the route, there are numerous hot spring resorts (onsen), ski resorts, accommodations, cafes, and local markets, making it easy to combine a drive with other sightseeing activities.
Since you will be driving through high-altitude areas, temperatures can drop significantly. We recommend bringing a light jacket or sweater even in summer. Additionally, because the road may be closed or restricted due to weather or snow, please check the latest road information in advance.
