Zakimi Castle Ruins is a World Heritage site located in Yomitan Village, Nakagami District, Okinawa. It has been officially selected as one of the '100名城 (100名城)' by the Japanese Castle Association. Situated on a hill approximately 120m above sea level, the site is famous for its beautiful curved stone walls and sophisticated masonry techniques. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy a sweeping view of nearly the entire Yomitan Village.
The castle was constructed in the early 15th century, a golden age when the Ryukyu Kingdom flourished through trade with China and Southeast Asian nations. It is said to have been built by the famous chieftain Gosamaru, also known as the 'Lord of Yomitan.' Gosamaru utilized advanced architectural techniques of the era to create this fortress, making it a vital cultural heritage site that preserves the history of the Ryukyu Dynasty.
The most distinctive feature of the ruins is the gently curving limestone walls. This design was masterfully crafted to utilize the natural terrain, showcasing exceptional masonry skills. Visitors can also see the stone gates that served as historical entry points. At the highest point of the ruins, a 360-degree unobstructed view opens up, allowing you to gaze across the vast landscapes of Yomitan Village.
The Zakimi Castle Ruins is open 24 hours a day, and there are no seasonal restrictions for visiting the grounds. During the daytime, the bright sunlight highlights the texture of the stone walls and the beautiful contrast with the surrounding greenery. Because of its elevation, the area is often breezy and pleasant for walking. For the best experience, a clear, sunny day is highly recommended to enjoy the expansive views.

As the site contains uneven stone steps and various slopes, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
