The Yura Peninsula in southern Oita Prefecture, particularly the Yura district of Tsukumi City, is home to a magnificent collection of over 5,000 Kawazu-zakura cherry trees. Unlike the more common Somei-yoshino variety, Kawazu-zakura bloom earlier in the year and are characterized by their striking, deep pink petals. This area is renowned for the seamless fusion of its beautiful rias coast scenery and the vivid colors of the blossoms. On clear days, the sharp contrast between the bright pink cherry blossoms, the deep blue sea, and the azure sky creates a breathtaking visual experience that captures the very essence of early spring.
The development of the Kawazu-zakura on the Yura Peninsula has been a community-driven effort. Since January 2005, local residents have worked tirelessly to cultivate and preserve this landscape. Through dedicated local activities and donations of saplings from well-wishers, the number of trees has steadily increased. This site stands as a symbol of coexistence between nature and community, representing the power of local passion to preserve seasonal beauty for future generations.
The primary highlight is the sheer volume of Kawazu-zakura trees lining the coastal roads. Because the trees are planted along the seaside routes, visitors can enjoy the seamless view of the ocean and pink blossoms both from car windows and while walking. The scenery is particularly spectacular during midday on sunny days, when the sunlight enhances the saturation of the pink petals against the blue sea. The Kawazu-zakura variety is also known for having larger, more intensely colored flowers than standard cherry blossoms, resulting in a more flamboyant and lush landscape.
The blooming season typically begins in early February, reaching its full peak around mid-February. This makes it an ideal destination for travelers who wish to experience the arrival of spring earlier than the traditional cherry blossom season. For the best visual impact, visit during the bright daylight hours when the contrast between the blue ocean and pink blossoms is most vivid. This area is best enjoyed through a scenic coastal drive. As the blossoms line the roads, most visitors experience the scenery while traveling by car, stopping at picturesque spots to take in the view. The surrounding landscape features the beautiful rias coast, making it a wonderful destination for a relaxing drive or a light stroll through nature. South of the Yura Peninsula lies Saiki City, which features several notable coastal attractions such as the famous Meoto Iwa (Married Couple Rocks) at Bungo Fuchigaura and the beautiful Sekai Beach, recognized as one of Japan's top beaches. Additionally, the tip of the peninsula near Hodo Island is known as a base for tuna fishing, highlighting the rich marine life of the region. You can easily combine a visit to the cherry blossoms with a drive through these nearby coastal gems.
