Located in Yomitan Village, Okinawa, the Yuntanza Museum is a cultural landmark situated right beside the World Heritage site, Zakimi Castle Ruins. More than just a display facility, this museum serves as a gateway to understanding the rich nature, unique folklore, and profound history of Okinawa. The museum is divided into two floors of exhibition areas where visitors can explore the architectural techniques of the Ryukyu Kingdom's Gusuku (castles), the-memories of the Battle of Okinawa, and the daily lives of local residents. Visiting the museum before or after exploring the castle ruins provides a much deeper, multi-dimensional perspective on the historical context of the site.
The history of this location is deeply intertwined with the adjacent Zakimi Castle Ruins. Zakimi Castle is a prominent Gusuku of the Ryukyu Kingdom, said to have been constructed in the early 15th century by Hosanmar of Yomiyama. The castle walls are famous for their beautiful, gentle curves, showcasing a unique Ryukyuan architectural style that blends defensive functionality with aesthetic elegance. Furthermore, this region holds a heavy history, having been used as a military base and anti-aircraft positions during World War II. The museum preserves both these aspects: the peaceful cultural heritage of the Ryukyu Kingdom and the somber memories of the modern war, passing these lessons down to future generations.
The museum's exhibits cover a wide range of themes. The first floor focuses on the structure of the Zakimi Castle Ruins and the natural and cultural heritage of Yomitan Village. The detailed explanations of the arch structures and stone-stacking techniques are essential for truly appreciating the value of this World Heritage site. The second floor features archaeological materials, local folklore, and highly detailed diorama displays regarding the Battle of Okinawa. These dioramas, including representations of 'Gama' (natural caves) and 'Kameko-baka' (turtle-shell shaped graves), are incredibly effective tools for visually understanding the unique cultural and historical landscape of Okinawa.
The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours. A particularly wonderful way to spend an afternoon is to visit the museum first and then head to the observation points at the adjacent Zakimi Castle Ruins. From the top of the castle walls, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the East China Sea, the surrounding villages, and even the Kerama Islands on clear days. The scenery changes beautifully as evening approaches, allowing you to enjoy both historical learning and natural beauty.
