Yuno-oku Inokashira Forest Road is a scenic forest road approximately 20km long, connecting the Yuno-oku area in Minobu Town, Yamanashi Prefecture, to Inokashira in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Starting from the Yuno-oku settlement via Prefectural Route 415 on the Yamanashi side, the route leads toward Shizuoka. Its most significant feature is the ability to view Mt. Fuji from its western side, offering a majestic and intimate perspective of the mountain that is rare to experience from other standard routes.
The road is managed by the Kanan Forest and Environmental Office of Yamanashi Prefecture and the Environmental Forest Division of Fujinomiya City. The route traverses the Tenzo mountain range, featuring the Yuno-oku Inokashira Tunnel at the Inokashira Pass (also known as Kabuto Pass), which serves as the prefectural border. This area is meticulously maintained to preserve the rich natural environment while serving as a vital transport route around the Mt. Fuji area.
The primary highlight is the evolving view of Mt. Fuji as you drive. The western vantage point provides a distinct silhouette and perspective compared to more common viewpoints. Additionally, the Shizuoka side features a paragliding takeoff site, linking the terrestrial beauty of the mountains with the spectacular views from the sky. Throughout the journey, travelers will experience a dynamic landscape of changing mountain topography and lush greenery.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The best time to visit is between May and October. Please note that the road is closed during the winter season (from late November to mid-May) due to weather conditions. On clear days, the silhouette of Mt. Fuji becomes exceptionally sharp, creating a stunning contrast against the deep blue sky and the surrounding green mountains. Driving during bright daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the intricate details of the mountain.
This route is a popular destination for driving and motorcycle touring. Because the road is relatively narrow and features many curves, careful driving is essential. However, the experience of navigating through such a diverse and changing landscape is a unique way to immerse yourself in nature. There are several parking areas and rest spots along the way where you can pull over to enjoy the view.
From the Yamanashi side, you can access the Yuno-oku area via Kabuto Onsen. On the Shizuoka side, the route leads toward Fujinomiya City, where you can find facilities related to paragliding. The area around Inokashira Pass, the midpoint of the Tenzo mountain range, is a highly enriched natural environment.
As there are very few shops or facilities within the forest road itself, it is highly recommended to carry your own drinking water and snacks. Due to the narrow sections of the road, please prioritize safety and drive with caution.
