Yumori Park is a beautifully developed natural area located along the Kawaumi River, a tributary of the Kiso River in the Nakatsugawa area of Gifu Prefecture. Since its development began in 1960, it has become a premier destination for enjoying natural landscapes. Known as the "Yumori Fuchi Scenic Forest," the area is characterized by lush forests of Kiso Hinoki cypress and Thujopsis, alongside the clear waters of the Kawaumi River and a series of five spectacular waterfalls. Since the late 1980s, the area has been specifically maintained as a premier spot for autumn colors, with over 15,000 maple trees planted to ensure a breathtaking display of seasonal colors.
The region has a long history as a source of Kiso Hinoki cypress, which has helped preserve its rich forest environment. As the park was developed, intentional planting of maple trees was carried out to allow visitors to enjoy the changing seasons, moving beyond simple nature conservation to create a destination for seasonal sightseeing. Every year in early November, the "Yumori Momiji Matsuri" (Maple Festival) is held, celebrating the local natural heritage. The area also has deep historical ties to local transportation, as the nearby Maruno Station once served this scenic region.
The greatest charm of Yumori Park lies in its five distinct waterfalls: Ryujin Falls, Borin Falls, Doana Falls, Aze Falls, and Hitotsu Falls. The walking paths around Ryujin Falls offer a serene experience of walking through clear streams and vibrant autumn leaves. From the "Momiji Bridge" (Maple Bridge) spanning the valley, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the river flowing through the colorful forest. In autumn, the entire valley is bathed in brilliant shades of red and gold, creating an unforgettable landscape.
Activities vary beautifully with the seasons. In spring, you can enjoy blooming flowers, while summer offers a refreshing escape with the cool Kawaumi River and lush green forests. The best time to visit is autumn (late October to mid-November) when the 15,000+ maple trees reach their peak color. During this time, the "Yumori Momiji Matsuri" features events such as photo contests, walking competitions, and even mountain trout (amago) fishing tournaments. Winter offers a peaceful, quiet atmosphere for those seeking solitude in nature.
A wide range of outdoor activities is available. For campers, there are two main areas: the "Fureai Zone" (45 bungalows) and the "Ryujin/National Forest Zone" (74 bungalows). From early April to early November, the trout fishing grounds are open, allowing you to enjoy fresh fish caught right on the spot. The park is also a popular hub for hiking and forest sports, making it a perfect place for active recreation.
The park is part of the larger, beautiful Yumori Valley area. Nearby scenic spots like the Tsuzaki Gorge offer even more breathtaking views of Gifu's natural beauty. After a day of hiking or camping, visitors can enjoy various local accommodations and dining options in the surrounding Nakatsugawa area.
Since the terrain can be uneven and includes many steps, we highly recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes, such as sneakers or trekking shoes. Paths near the waterfalls and riverbanks may be slippery due to moisture or weather conditions. Please note that some paths may be temporarily closed due to heavy rain; it is wise to check local updates before your visit. Regarding payments, please carry cash, as many facilities and nearby services may not accept credit cards. While some signage is available, English support is limited, so using a translation app is recommended. For drone photography, please follow local regulations and instructions.
