Yukitagawa Dam Forest Park is a natural oasis located in Kurume Town, Kuji District, Iwate Prefecture, surrounded by a serene dam lake and lush forests. The park's greatest charm lies in its ever-changing seasonal scenery. In spring, the landscape is transformed by approximately 150,000 tulips blooming across a 7,000-square-meter field, set against the backdrop of an iconic 16-meter tall windmill with 20-meter diameter blades. This striking view makes the park a landmark of the region. Whether you are looking for a peaceful stroll, a camping adventure, or a relaxing retreat by the water, the park offers a perfect harmony of natural beauty and well-maintained facilities.
The area has a long history of charcoal production, a tradition preserved within the park at the 'Charcoal Museum.' This facility houses approximately 170 artifacts and documents related to the local climate and traditional charcoal-making industry, offering visitors a glimpse into the region's industrial heritage. Developed alongside the construction of the Yukitagawa Dam, the park serves as a vital hub for water and greenery, where man-made structures and the natural environment coexist beautifully.
There are numerous spots to enjoy within the park. The spring highlight is undoubtedly the tulip field and the windmill observatory, which provides a panoramic view of the blooming flowers. Another must-see is the 'Memorial Bridge,' a 154-meter long red suspension bridge spanning the Yukitagawa Dam lake. The bridge offers stunning views of the water and the surrounding greenery, which changes beautifully through the seasons. Other facilities include the 'Thousand Stage' for large gatherings, the Charcoal Museum for cultural learning, and various areas for relaxation such as the hydrangea garden, the Katakuri (dogtooth violet) habitat, and the camping grounds.
The park offers a different face every season. From late April to mid-May, the 'Forest, Water, and Tulip Festival' brings the most vibrant colors to the area. In summer, the hydrangea blooms and the camping season is in full swing. Autumn brings breathtaking foliage around the dam lake. While the general operating hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, please note that the availability of specific facilities like the shop or restaurant may vary by season and is recommended to be checked in advance.
Visitors can engage in a variety of outdoor activities. The camping grounds provide a perfect setting to stay overnight surrounded by nature. For a taste of local flavors, the on-site restaurant serves unique treats like 'Sarnashi' (hardy fruit) soft-serve ice cream. Additionally, the 'Many Side House,' a large wooden-deck-style rest area near the campsite, is equipped with tables and chairs, making it an ideal spot for a picnic or a relaxing break. From nature observation to enjoying local delicacies, there is something for everyone.
The park is nestled in a quiet, scenic environment. The surrounding Kurume area is part of a larger natural landscape in Iwate Prefecture, making it an excellent stop for travelers exploring the northern Tohoku region. The local seasonal events and unique local products, such as the Sarnashi fruit, are part of the special charm of this region.
