Located on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in Toyama Prefecture, "Yuki-no-Otani" (Snow Valley) is a massive snow corridor that appears near the Murodo area at an altitude of 2,450m. In this region, one of the world's heaviest snowfall areas, snow accumulation can exceed 20 meters. Through precise snow removal work, a pedestrian path is carved out between vertical snow walls reaching 15 to 20 meters in height. The striking contrast between the brilliant white snow and the deep blue sky creates a monumental and surreal landscape that is truly unforgettable.

History & Background

The formation of this site is a feat of engineering. Every year, snow removal begins in late January to locate the road buried beneath the heavy snow. Using GPS technology, specialized bulldozers, and rotary snowplows, workers meticulously carve a path through the massive drifts to reveal the road. This process creates the temporary "Snow Corridor" that is opened to visitors, showcasing the incredible power of human-led engineering meeting natural forces.

Main Attractions

The highlight is undoubtedly the towering snow walls on either side. Reaching heights of up to 20 meters, these walls offer an overwhelming sense of scale and wonder. Visitors can walk through a dedicated pedestrian section of approximately 500 meters, feeling completely immersed in the white walls. Additionally, the nearby "Panorama Road" offers stunning views of the Tateyama Mountain Range. Because the height and texture of the walls change depending on the time of year, the scenery offers a different character every time you visit.

Seasonal Recommendations

Yuki-no-Otani is open for a limited period from April 15 to June 25. The experience varies by month:

• Mid-April: The walls are at their most imposing (15–20m), offering a powerful sight even in near-freezing temperatures.
• Golden Week (Late April/Early May): The snow quality is excellent, providing beautiful vistas under clear blue skies.
• May to June: As temperatures rise, the environment becomes more comfortable for walking, though the walls may decrease to about 10–15m in height.

Activities & Experience

The primary activity is the "Yuki-no-Otani Walk," a stroll through the heart of the snow walls. The 500-meter path takes approximately 15 minutes to walk one way (downhill) and about 20 minutes for the return trip (uphill). Depending on the season, there may also be event areas like the "Yuki! Fureai Hiroba" or exhibitions of the specialized snow removal vehicle, "Tateyama Kumotaro." It is a rare chance to feel the immense scale and texture of the snow up close.
