The Yuki no Kairo (Snow Corridor) is a limited-time seasonal spectacle located on National Route 103 (Hakkada-Towada Gold Line) in the Hakkoda Mountains, Aomori Prefecture. As massive amounts of snow are cleared to open the road, giant snow walls appear on both sides. Driving through this white corridor feels like navigating a magnificent, dreamlike snow labyrinth, offering a truly dynamic and surreal experience.

History & Cultural Context

This landscape is a unique result of the snow removal process required to make the road passable after winter. Typically, National Route 103 opens around April 1st, though this date can fluctuate depending on weather conditions. The scenery is a beautiful intersection of nature's heavy snowfall and the advanced engineering required to maintain the road, creating a view that can only be experienced during this specific window of time.

Main Highlights

The greatest attraction is the towering snow walls that rise several meters high on either side of the road. The walls are at their most impressive and beautiful in early April, immediately following the road's opening. The sharp contrast between the brilliant blue sky and the pure white snow walls makes it a perfect spot for photography. The section near Kasamatsu Pass, at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters, is particularly breathtaking and serves as the highlight of the drive.

Best Seasons & Times to Visit

The Yuki no Kairo is only visible during a limited period from early April to May. For the most spectacular views, it is highly recommended to visit in early to mid-April, right after the road opens. Please note that as May approaches, the snow begins to melt and the walls become significantly shorter.

Regarding the time of day, a sunny day between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM is ideal. During these hours, the sunlight hits the snow surfaces directly, creating a vivid contrast with the blue sky. Avoid early morning or late evening if possible, as temperatures drop and there is a higher risk of ice forming on the road surface, which can affect driving safety.

Activities & Experiences

The primary way to enjoy this site is through a scenic drive. Because the road is relatively narrow, this experience is designed for travelers in vehicles. For a broader view, you can also use the nearby Hakkoda Ropeway to look down upon the snow-covered landscape from the summit of Mt. Tamoyachidake (1,324m). Exploring the summit area allows you to enjoy the vast snowy vistas on foot.

Surrounding Areas

After your drive, you can relax at nearby hot spring resorts such as Sukayu Onsen or Yachi Onsen. Additionally, near the Hakkoda Ropeway Summit Park Station, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Hakkoda mountain range, Aomori City, and Mutsu Bay.

  • Language Support: Some English signage and support are available at nearby tourist facilities and the ropeway, though full English service may be limited.
  • Reservations: No prior reservation is required for driving. If using local transport, please check schedules in advance.
  • Clothing & Gear: April is still quite cold; heavy jackets or coats are essential. It is highly recommended to use a vehicle equipped with winter tires.
  • Photography: Photography is permitted, but do NOT stop or park on the road to take photos, as the passage is narrow and dangerous.
  • Accessibility: While the road is paved, walking between the snow walls is difficult for wheelchair users.
  • Safety: The road is very narrow. Please drive with extreme caution, especially when passing oncoming vehicles, and strictly follow all parking prohibitions.
