The Yukemuri Observatory is a scenic lookout point located on an elevated ridge overlooking the Kannawa Onsen area in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. From this vantage point, you can witness the quintessential sight of a hot spring town: the "yukemuri" (rising steam) billowing from various points throughout the town. The landscape is framed by the majestic Mt. Tsurumi and the seasonal colors of Mt. Ogiyama, creating a unique harmony between natural beauty and hot spring culture. The area is well-equipped with benches and information boards, providing a comfortable environment to relax while soaking in the view.
The steam-filled landscapes of Beppu are a cherished part of Japan's rich cultural heritage. The rising steam seen in this region is a long-standing symbol of the local hot spring culture. From the observatory, visitors can observe how the natural mountains and the developed hot spring townscape integrate seamlessly. This scenery is beloved by both local residents and tourists as a quintessential representation of traditional Japanese landscape aesthetics.

The greatest attraction is the striking contrast between the rising steam from the Kannowa Onsen streets and the mountain ranges in the background. The changing expressions of Mt. Ogiyama through the seasons and the steady presence of Mt. Tsumi are essential elements of this view. Additionally, on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, the steam is illuminated between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM. This nighttime illumination creates a much more emotional and mystical atmosphere than during the daytime.
Because the colors of the surrounding mountains (especially Mt. Ogiyama) change with the seasons, the view offers a different character depending on when you visit. The harmony between nature and the steam is particularly striking during the mild seasons of spring and autumn. During the day, you can see the lively activity of the hot spring town, while the nighttime hours (19:00–21:00 on weekends and holidays) offer a magical experience with the illuminated steam.

The observatory features information boards that introduce the local landscape, allowing you to learn about the specific topography and features of the area as you look out. There are also benches provided, making it an ideal spot to spend a relaxing time. You can truly feel the atmosphere of the hot spring area while observing the relationship between the town and the surrounding nature.
Directly below the observatory lies the Kannawa Onsen district. This area is filled with various accommodation facilities and restaurants, making it a great place to visit during your sightseeing breaks. Furthermore, the adjacent natural areas around Mt. Tsurumi and Mt. Ogiyama serve as excellent bases for hiking and nature walks.
The observatory is located within a residential area. Please be mindful of noise and maintain good manners to respect the local residents. As temperatures can drop depending on the season or time of day, we recommend bringing a light jacket or outer layer. Accessible parking spaces are available in the parking lot.
