Yugyo Yanagi is a historic site located in Ashino, Nasu Town, Tochigi Prefecture, centered around a magnificent, ancient willow tree. This site is a deeply atmospheric location where religious legends dating back to the Muromachi period intertwine with the literary legacy of the Edo-period haiku master Matsuo Basho. It serves not just as a natural landscape, but as a cultural landmark deeply rooted in Japanese classical literature and spiritual history.
The history of this site traces back to the Muromachi period and the visit of the 19th generation priest, Sonkoku Shonin, of the Ji sect. According to legend, the priest used his Buddhist teachings to bring peace to the spirit of an old man who was said to be the spirit of the willow tree. This connection to the Ji sect is one of the origins of the name 'Yugyo.' Furthermore, when Matsuo Basho visited this area during the Genroku era and recorded his experiences in his masterpiece, 'The Narrow Road to the Deep North' (Oku no Hosomichi), the site gained immense fame. Its cultural significance is further highlighted by its frequent appearance as a subject in Noh and Kyogen-related literature.
The centerpiece of the site is the massive, historic willow tree. Surrounding the tree are several stone monuments (kuhis) dedicated to the great figures of Japanese literary history. Specifically, you can find monuments dedicated to Matsuo Basho, Saigyo, and Yosa Buson. These monuments serve as a testament to the poets who once graced this landscape and illustrate why this location has been cherished as a 'utamakura' (a poetic place name) for centuries.
As an outdoor historical site, the scenery changes beautifully with the seasons. The period from May to June is particularly striking, as the fresh green shoots of the willow tree emerge in time with the rice-planting season. While there are no specific operating hours, visiting during bright daylight hours is ideal for observing the intricate details of the willow and reading the inscriptions on the stone monuments.
