Yugo Onsen, located in Mimasaka City, Okayama Prefecture, is a prestigious hot spring destination with over 1,200 years of history. As one of the three famous hot springs of Mimasaka, it is widely celebrated as a 'skin-beautifying hot spring.' The area is steeped in the legend of a white heron that healed its wounded leg in these waters, which is why the springs are also known as 'Sagi-no-yu' (Heron's Spring). The water is a low-osmolarity, weakly alkaline spring containing sodium, calcium, and chloride. The hot spring town is lined with charming traditional inns (ryokan) and hotels, offering a unique blend of relaxation and discovery through its connection to local culture, such as toy museums and model trains.
The history of this area dates back to the monk Ennin of Enryaku-ji, who reportedly witnessed a white heron healing itself in these waters during his travels. Historically, the area was used for 'Toji' (hot spring cure/therapy), where people would soak in warm waters for extended periods to maintain health. Since the 1990s, the area has evolved into a 'health resort' destination, with improved facilities for sports and wellness. Furthermore, Yugo Onsen has successfully branded itself as a 'Toy Town,' developing cultural hubs like the Modern Toy Museum and railway model museums that appeal to visitors of all generations.
Visitors are warmly welcomed by the iconic 'Karakuri Clock' and the 'Sagi-yu Bridge' at the entrance of the hot spring town. Throughout the area, you can easily enjoy the hot springs through various foot baths (ashiyu) and public bathhouses during your strolls. A major highlight is the collection of museums featuring railway models, antique music boxes, and Showa-era toys, allowing visitors to experience both the nostalgic atmosphere of the hot spring town and a deep sense of cultural curiosity.
In the early morning, you may be able to witness a beautiful sea of clouds from nearby observation points. The natural scenery changes beautifully with each season, offering a fresh landscape every time you visit. Please note that operating hours for various facilities and public bathhouses vary; it is recommended to check the specific business hours in advance for a smooth trip. At night, the town is beautifully illuminated, creating a serene and romantic atmosphere.
Beyond soaking in the hot springs, Yugo Onsen offers a wide variety of activities. At the Modern Toy Museum or the Railway Model Museum, you can engage with Japanese history and culture through exhibitions and hands-on workshops. The surrounding area features well-maintained sports facilities, including the Okayama International Circuit and various rugby and soccer fields. Since much of the sightseeing involves walking through the hot spring town, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
