Yugendo Cave is a natural cave museum located in Higashiyama, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. Discovered in 1980, this cave showcases geological layers from approximately 350 million years ago, offering a glimpse into the ancient Earth. Inside, you will encounter a mysterious emerald green subterranean lake, beautiful stalactites, and hanging stone formations. The cave is also known as a "Love Power Spot," as visitors can find natural heart-shaped patterns in the stones, adding a touch of romance to the geological wonder.
The geological layers here date back to the Middle Paleozoic era, roughly 350 million years ago, when this area was a shallow seabed. The cave walls preserve precious fossils of marine life from that era, including crinoids, trilobites, fusulinids, and ancient corals. The discovery of crinoid calyx fossils on solid rock here is considered highly significant for scientific research. Additionally, the area across from the cave exit has long been a site of spiritual devotion, associated with the Kannon Reizan mountain traditions.
