Gigen-ji is a temple of the Soto Zen sect located in Nakano City, Nagano Prefecture. The temple grounds are home to approximately 1,000 cherry trees, making it one of the most famous sakura viewing spots in the Nakano area. The landscape is defined by a stunning variety of blossoms, most notably the historic weeping cherry trees (shidarezakura) that are over 500 years old, alongside various Shidarezakura and Somei Yoshino varieties that change their expression with the seasons. During the spring season, the temple grounds are transformed into a breathtaking sea of pink and white blossoms.
The temple's mountain name is Ryugen-zan. The main deity is Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha), accompanied by Monju Bosatsu and Fugen Bosatsu. The temple grounds feature several preserved structures, including the Main Hall (Hondo), Bell Tower (Shoro), Kuri (monk's quarters), and Sanmon (mountain gate). In 2010, the "Gigen-ji Enmei-sui" (Life-extending water), sourced from a well on the temple grounds, was designated as one of Nagano Prefecture's "Shinshu Famous Waters/Secret Waters." The approach to the temple also features historical markers such as the Kekkai stone dated to the 6th year of the Shotoku era and various Rokujizo statues.
The most striking feature is the sheer volume of cherry blossoms that fill the temple grounds. A truly breathtaking sight is the 500-year-old weeping cherry tree; when viewed from the bottom of the stone steps, the branches seem to drape over you like a canopy. Additionally, during the peak bloom, the yellow of blooming rapeseed flowers (nanohana) often creates a beautiful color contrast with the pink cherry blossoms. The architectural-style buildings, such as the Main Hall and Bell Tower, add a profound sense of history to the natural scenery.
The peak season for cherry blossoms is typically from mid-to-late April. The blossoms often reach full bloom in late April, featuring a dense canopy of weeping cherry trees and Somei Yoshino. Because the timing of the bloom and the appearance of the weeping varieties change every year, it is recommended to check the local bloom status before visiting. Visiting during the daytime allows you to fully appreciate the vibrant colors of the blossoms and the surrounding greenery.
