Yufuin Station is a key station on the JR Kyudai Main Line located in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture. Completed in 1990, the station was designed by Arata Isozaki, one of Japan's most celebrated architects. The building features a sophisticated, chic exterior unified by a black color palette, with a central concourse that boasts a grand 12m high atrium. The station utilizes a 'gate-less' structure, meaning there are no physical ticket gates to obstruct the flow, allowing travelers to move smoothly to the platforms. Beyond being a transit point, the station serves as a cultural hub, often hosting events and exhibitions in its gallery spaces.
The design of the station is inspired by the concept of a chapel, blending modern aesthetics with a sense of serenity. While it is a wooden structure, the design is incredibly sophisticated and polished. The station was built to foster interaction between local residents and tourists, serving as a place where cultural events can take place within the spacious concourse. Additionally, the presence of the Yufuin Onsen Tourist Information Center makes it an essential resource for travelers exploring the region.
The most striking architectural feature is the 12m high open atrium, which provides a sense of immense freedom and light to all visitors. On Platform 1, you can experience a traditional Japanese footbath (ashiyu) using local hot spring water, a perfect way to relax while waiting for your train. Even the auditory experience is curated; the station's arrival melody, 'Elegant Trip' by Minoru Motani, helps set a refined atmosphere. For convenience, the 'Yufuin Chikki' luggage forwarding service is located across from the station, making it easy to explore without heavy bags.
The station is designed with large glass doors separating the concourse from the platforms to help regulate the temperature. During the colder winter months, the waiting area is equipped with underfloor heating, ensuring a comfortable experience even in chilly weather. Regardless of the season, visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended to fully appreciate the way light interacts with the modern wooden architecture through the high atrium.
A must-do experience is relaxing in the footbath located on Platform 1 (please note this is a paid service). At the Tourist Information Center within the station, you can also arrange for local activities such as booking a horse-drawn carriage (tsuji basha), reserving a sightseeing taxi, or renting bicycles (Rakuchari) and rental cars. This makes the station the ultimate command center for your Yufun adventures.
Immediately outside the station is Ekimae-dori, a street lined with numerous restaurants, accommodations, and souvenir shops. The area is highly convenient for travelers, especially with the luggage forwarding services located nearby to support your sightseeing. It serves as the primary gateway to the beautiful Yufun Onsen area.
The station is barrier-free, with ramps and level crossings connecting the platforms for easy movement. When using the footbath, please be mindful of others and follow local etiquette. For payments at the information center or nearby facilities, cash, credit cards, and transit IC cards are generally accepted.
