Mount Yufu is a beautiful stratovolcano located in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, standing at an elevation of 1,583 meters. The mountain is characterized by its unique twin-peak structure, consisting of the East Peak and the higher West Peak, earning it the nickname "Bungo Fuji" (Fuji of Bungo). Situated within the Aso Kuju National Park, it has been revered as a sacred mountain since ancient times. Its name and significance are even recorded in historical texts like the Kojiki and Bungo no Kuni Fudoki, highlighting its deep cultural roots.
Mount Yufu has long been a site of spiritual devotion. Historical records in the Bungo no Kuni Fudoki mention a stone chamber at the summit where ice remains even in summer. The mountain is also closely linked to the Unagi Hime Kami Shrine and mountain-based Buddhist traditions. Historically, there were even periods when Buddhist structures were located on the mid-slopes, illustrating the seamless blend of nature and faith. In recent years, the mountain gained wider recognition as the setting for the NHK morning drama series "Kaze no Haruka."
The most striking feature of Mount Yufu is its elegant twin-peak silhouette. Near the summit, visitors can enjoy the "Ohatsu-meguri" route, which allows you to walk around the rim of the crater and observe the volcanic topography. On certain days with specific weather conditions, you may witness the "Brocken Spectre" phenomenon, where your shadow is cast onto clouds or mist with a circular halo of light around it. From the summit, the view is unparalleled, stretching across the Yufuin Basin and Beppu Bay to the Kuju mountain range, and on clear days, even reaching as far as Fukuoka and Nagasaki prefectures.
While the hiking trails are open year-round, the scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. From April to May, the lower slopes are adorned with the blooming of the Miyama Kirishima (azalea), offering a vibrant landscape. In autumn, the mountain transforms with rich foliage. In winter, you might encounter beautiful frost formations (riming). For safety, it is highly recommended to complete your hike during daylight hours.
There are three main climbing routes: the Central (Front), West, and East trailheads. The Central Trailhead is the most popular, featuring a well-maintained parking area and accessibility via bus. Once near the summit, the crater-rim walk provides a unique geological experience. The area is also a haven for flora, including Miyama Kirishima, Higodai, and Matsumushiso plants.
At the foot of Mount Yufu lies the world-famous Yufuin Onsen and the nearby Beppu Onsen (Beppu Hatto) hot spring areas. The region is also known for the acidic spring waters of Tsukahara Onsen. A common way to experience the area is to combine a hike with a relaxing soak in a local hot spring or a stroll through the charming streets of Yufuin.
When climbing, prepare for rapid temperature changes due to altitude; high-quality thermal layers and windbreakers are essential. While trails are established, some sections can be unstable, so sturdy hiking boots are a must.
