Yotsushira Shrine is a significant spiritual site located in the center of Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. Its most unique feature is the simultaneous worship of the "Four Pillars" (Yotsushira) of deities. Because these four distinct deities come together, the shrine is revered as the 'God of Binding Wishes,' possessing the power to manifest any prayer into reality. Its excellent accessibility—just a short walk from Matsumoto Station—makes it an ideal stop during a day of sightseeing.
Founded around 1879, Yotsushira Shrine holds deep roots in Japanese mythology. The four deities enshrined here play vital roles in the cosmic order: Amenominakanushi-no-kami, Takamimusashi-no-kami, Kamimusubi-no-kami, and Amaterasu-Omikami. Together, they represent everything from the origins of the universe to the blessings of the sun. This convergence of deities makes the shrine a sacred space for the creation of all things, the forging of human connections, and the cycle of life, a tradition cherished by the local community.
The shrine grounds feature a majestic main hall (Honden) that radiates a profound, sacred atmosphere. Within the precinct, you will also find various sub-shrines, such as Ebisu Shrine, each representing different blessings. At the amulet and Goshuin reception desk, you can find beautifully designed Goshuin (sacred calligraphy stamps) and a wide variety of Omamori (protective amulets) for health, traffic safety, academic success, and more. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, offering new discoveries with every visit.
You can enjoy the changing beauty of the seasons at Yotsushira Shrine. The landscape harmonizes with the historic architecture, featuring cherry blossoms in the spring and vibrant autumn foliage in the fall. While the shrine grounds are accessible 24 hours a day—allowing for a peaceful visit in the quiet early morning or a reflective moment at dusk—please note that the reception for Goshuin and amulets is limited to specific hours.
When praying, it is customary to not only offer a silent prayer but to consciously focus on the specific role of the deities being honored. Visitors often choose specific amulets or collect Goshuin to commemorate their connection to the deities, whether they are seeking luck in love, business success, or long life. A slow stroll through the shrine grounds to experience the historic architecture and natural surroundings is a wonderful way to find mental clarity.
Since Yotsushira Shrine is located in the heart of Matsumoto, there are many nearby attractions. You can easily combine a visit to the shrine with a walk to Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's most famous historic landmarks. The surrounding area is also filled with local restaurants and shops, making it perfect for a post-prayer stroll through the city. The location is highly convenient for travelers using public transport, being only about a 12-minute walk from Matsumoto Station.
No special preparation is required for your visit, but we recommend wearing clothing appropriate for the season. If you wish to receive a Goshuin or an amulet, please arrive during the reception hours (approximately 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Note that all transactions at the shrine, including the purchase of amulets and Goshuin, are strictly cash-only. It is helpful to have small change or 1,000 yen notes ready. Additionally, the annual festival is held from October 1st to 3rd; if you wish to request a formal prayer (Gokito), it is recommended to visit outside of these dates.
