Yoshitaka no Okura is a magnificent Yamazakura (mountain cherry tree) located in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture, with an estimated age of over 400 years. Designated as a natural monument of Chiba Prefecture, this tree is a cherished local symbol known for its overwhelming presence. Standing over 10 meters tall with a maximum branch spread of 25 meters, the tree creates a spectacle during full bloom that looks like a small pink mountain resting on the ground. A key characteristic is that it blooms approximately one week later than the common Somei-Yoshino variety, offering a unique window of time to witness its powerful and elegant beauty.
This great cherry tree is deeply rooted in the local history of the region. Its vitality has been preserved through the dedicated efforts of groups such as the "Yoshitaka no Okura Preservation Society." In recent years, to ensure this precious 400-year-old tree is passed down to future generations, detailed diagnoses by tree doctors have been conducted. Based on these professional assessments, continuous preservation activities—including large-scale pruning and soil improvement—are carried out to protect the tree's health. It is not merely a tourist spot, but a site managed with a strong sense of duty to preserve a vital natural heritage.
The greatest highlight is the view during full bloom. The sheer volume of the pink blossoms transforms the surrounding scenery, creating an awe-inspiring sight. Unlike the common Somei-Yoshino, the Yamazakura offers a distinctively robust and wild beauty. Because the peak bloom period is extremely short—often lasting only 2 to 3 days before turning into green leaves—it is crucial to time your visit perfectly. The best time to visit is typically from late March to early April. To see the tree at its most spectacular, aim to visit about one week after the peak of the common Somei-Yoshino blossoms. Since the full bloom period is very brief, we highly recommend checking the current blooming status online before heading out. While the pink flowers look vibrant under the bright daylight, please be aware that traffic restrictions are implemented during the peak season, so please allow plenty of time for your journey.
