Yoshino Park is a beautiful urban oasis and a beloved gathering place for the people of Kagoshima. Recognized as one of Japan's "100 Best Urban Parks" in 1989, its scenic beauty is highly regarded nationwide. Situated on a plateau approximately 234 meters above sea level, the park offers an unobstructed, dynamic view of the unique Kagoshima landscape. With about 70,000 trees representing roughly 140 different species, the park's character changes beautifully with every season.
The park was developed through a city planning project spanning about eight years starting in 1964. Since its official opening on May 16, 1970, it has served as a vital space for recreation and relaxation for Kagoshima residents. It also played a significant role as the main venue for the 28th National Urban Greening Exhibition (Hana Kagoshima 2011), symbolizing the region's commitment to greenery and culture.
There are many diverse spots to explore within the park. The most notable is the "Coastal Observation Deck," which provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the majestic Sakurajima volcano, the Kirishima mountain range, and Mt. Kaimon across Kinko Bay. Near the Fountain Plaza, you will find clusters of approximately 40,000 azalea bushes that create a vibrant carpet of color in the spring. Other serene areas include the Soco-te Garden (Cycad Garden) which offers a tropical feel, a traditional Japanese Garden, and the charming Sakura-en garden, perfect for a peaceful stroll.
The park offers different experiences depending on when you visit. Spring (March to April) is the most spectacular season, when cherry blossoms and azaleas are in full bloom—an ideal time for photography. In summer, the "Chibikko Pool" (Kids' Pool) becomes a popular spot for families (please note that pool hours may change based on weather). Autumn and winter offer a more tranquil atmosphere, with clear skies that make the view of Sakurajima even more vivid. For the best experience, we recommend a morning stroll in the fresh air or a walk during the golden hour to enjoy the beautiful sunset colors.
