Yoro Falls is a spectacular waterfall located in Yoro Town, Yoro District, Gifu Prefecture, part of the Kiso River system. With a drop of 32 meters and a width of 4 meters, it is a highly renowned spot selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls and Top 100 Water Sources. This site is not just a scenic viewpoint but also a place deeply connected to historical tales and legends. The falls are the setting for the famous "Yoro Koshio Legend" (The Legend of Filial Piety). This tale tells of a devoted son whose filial piety was so great that the waterfall's water miraculously turned into sake. Furthermore, historical records suggest that when Emperor Montoku visited this area, he praised the water as a "beautiful spring" (Bisen), and the era was renamed to "Yoro" during a time of imperial amnesty. This gives the very name of the location a profound historical significance. Additionally, the local culture is also associated with "Yoro Cider," which was famously produced using the pure water from this region.
The greatest draw is the powerful sight of the water cascading vertically down the cliff. The landscape created by the surrounding topography never fails to captivate visitors. The area is also part of the Tokai Nature Trail, making it a popular destination for hikers. The scenery changes beautifully with every season: the cherry blossoms in spring and the vibrant autumn colors in fall add a stunning layer of color to the white cascading water, allowing you to enjoy the diverse beauty of the four seasons.
