Yonako Dai-taki is an exceptionally beautiful waterfall located in Suzaka City, Nagano Prefecture, and is officially designated as one of the '100 Best Waterfalls in Japan.' The site is composed of two massive falls: Fudo Falls (89m drop) and Gongen Falls (82m drop), which flow through a valley cutting the caldera of Mt. Shio. The sight of these two massive tiers of falling water is a rare and breathtaking spectacle in Japan. This location is filled with the raw energy of water, offering a profound sense of awe to all who visit.
This area has been deeply connected to nature worship since ancient times. At the base of the falls lies the Okunoin Main Hall of 'Yonako Fudo-son,' where the deity Fudo Myoo is enshrined alongside the waterfall itself, which is revered as a sacred object of worship. The main hall, rebuilt in the mid-Edo period, is a designated Tangible Cultural Property of Suzaka City. Historically, this site has been a sacred place for mountain asceticism (Shugendo), where practitioners performed purification rituals in the water. It also holds significant historical value as a site that preserves local legends and cultural traditions.
The greatest highlight is the powerful two-tier waterfall system. The thunderous roar and the mist from Fudo Falls and Gongen Falls allow visitors to feel the sheer strength of nature directly. On the opposite bank of the falls, there is a park built on the former site of the Yonako Mine tailings, offering a perfect vantage point to view both waterfalls simultaneously. Additionally, the recently renovated 'Nekodake Sanso' provides a peaceful space to harmonize with nature while enjoying the view of the falls.
The charm of Yonako Dai-taki lies in its ever-changing expressions throughout the seasons. In spring, vibrant fresh greenery envelops the falls, while summer offers a refreshing escape with cool breezes and the soothing sound of water. Autumn brings a stunning display of colorful foliage that complements the movement of the water, and in winter, visitors may witness the rare and spectacular sight of 'icefalls' (frozen waterfalls) during the harsh cold months. We recommend visiting during different seasons to experience these unique natural transformations.
From the parking area, you can enjoy a trekking experience along a mountain path that takes about 30 minutes to reach the base of the falls. There is a well-maintained walking course (approximately a 1.5-hour loop) where you can feel the energy of the wilderness. While the paths are designed for nature walks, please note that some sections may be steep or slippery depending on the weather.
The surrounding area is dotted with spots that offer a sense of local history. Notable nearby locations include the 'Former Kamitakai District Office' for its historical architecture, 'Donyu Kannon-do' known for its cherry blossoms, and the 'Watakoshi Salon/Kura Museum' for cultural experiences. These sites offer a deeper insight into the cultural heritage of Suzaka City.
As it requires a 30-minute hike from the parking lot, please wear sturdy walking shoes or trekking shoes.
