The area has been cherished for its rich natural scenery since ancient times. Historical records suggest that the poet Takahama Kyoshi once praised this view as being even more beautiful than Matsushima, one of Japan's most famous scenic spots. This enduring appeal is recognized internationally, as the area has been awarded one star in the Michelin Green Guide, highlighting the exceptional value of its natural landscape.
From the observatory, you can gaze out over the rias coastline of Ago Bay, observing the numerous pearl cultivation rafts floating on the sea and the diverse islands scattered across the horizon. A key feature is the 'Yokoyama Sky Cafe Terrace' located toward the summit. There are several distinct viewing platforms, including the 'Komorebi-hi Terrace,' 'Soyokaze Terrace,' 'Ago Bay Observatory,' and 'Miharashi Observatory,' each offering a unique angle and perspective of the bay's scenery.
While the view is spectacular year-round, the sunset is highly recommended. Watching the sun set over the islands of Ago Bay is a truly magical experience. As you walk through the area, you can also observe local flora such as Umegaushi (Japanese pieris), Asebi (Japanese Andromeda), and Tobera (Japanese Spindle) growing along the paths.
The observatory features the 'Mirador Shima' cafe, where you can relax and enjoy a beverage while soaking in the view. Additionally, the visitor center at the base of the observatory offers opportunities to learn about the Ise-Shima National Park. Visitors can also engage in hands-on cultural experiences, such as crafting traditional pearl accessories. The area is also equipped with well-maintained walking paths, making it an excellent spot for hiking and trekking.
